Ghana Education Service to review education manuals

Tamale, Feb. 16, GNA - The Ghana Education Service (GES) is reviewin= g educational manuals and handbooks for Headteachers, Circuit Supervisors, an= d School Management Committees (SMCs) to help improve the quality of teaching and learning at the basic schools.

The review also seeks to strengthen the relationship between school authorities and the community as well as clearly define the role of all the actors in education delivery to complement each other's work. The National Communication Participation Coordinator in-charge of Basi= c Education at GES, Mrs. Josephine Kuffour-Duah, revealed this in an intervie= w with the Ghana News Agency in Tamale on Wednesday.

"We are almost through with the review, so the next is the printing and distribution which we hope to complete by the second quarter of the year,= " she said. Mrs. Kuffour-Duah said the project, which is being supported by the World Bank and the Partnership for Accountability Governance and Education of Care International, would train all the stakeholders to appreciate the essence of the manual and how it could be utilized to achieve its goals. "For instance one of the basic mandate of the SMC according to the manual is to be able to analyze the performance data of the pupils during School Performance Review Meetings and deliberate on how to adopt effectiv= e and efficient steps to improve the quality of teaching and learning", she said. This function, Mrs Kuffour-Duah, said could not be performed if the SM= C were not aware of it, 93this initiative will expose the various stakeholde= rs to all these by educating them and make them responsible". She noted that as part of the exercise, an evaluation would be conducted after a year of its implementation to assess its effectiveness in the sector.
