Ghana Derby Peaceful

The Ghanaian derby has finished without incident with Asante Kotoko defeating their arch-rivals Hearts of Oak 2-0 in Kumasi on Sunday. There was high tension ahead of the fixture which marked the first clash between the two sides since May 9, when 126 people died in Accra.

Fans were crushed to death in a stampede after police fired tear gas in a deeply flawed attempt to control fighting.

Security was tight in Kumasi to avert a similar tragedy.

A minutes silence was observed before kick-off to remember the victims in Accra.

Kotoko scored two goals inside 10 minutes in the second-half to close the gap on Hearts, who top the league, to just a single point.

Hearts had a goal disallowed in the 76th minute from a free-kick by midfielder Edmund Copson, but the referee ruled that the kick was in fact indirect.
