Ghana Card registration takes off in Tema

Scores of residents of Tema made long queues at the various designated centres for the mass registration of the Ghana Card which commenced in the Accra East area on Tuesday.

The Ghana News Agency observed that the process at the centres were slow as a number of residents had stood for a while anxiously waiting for their turn.

Some were also at the centres to make enquiries on the primary and secondary documents needed for the registration.

At the Padmore Street No.1 Primary School in the Padmore Electoral area, Tema Community One, as at 0900 hours, only three had gone through the manual registration while others complained about the slow pace.

Mr Mark Awini, resident of Community One, Site One, told the GNA that he went to the centre at about 0530 hours making him the fifth person in the queue, adding that the registration did not start on time and that some had to return home because they did not have the primary documents.

Miss Rafia Abdu Karim, also stated that, “I came at about 06:30 am but the officials told us that the forms were not in so we had to wait, now they are telling us that they are registering but so far only three have registered. We also have problems with arrangements, and the way they are giving the numbers as tags is creating confusion”.

Miss Zuerah Nuhu, on her part, said a certain guy shared numbers to the first 50 persons and those who came after that were not given any but were asked to just join the queue.

Miss Nuhu said some of those who got the numbers had gone home while they were still in the queue.

"We will not allow to register before us when they return" adding that, "No one should be given a number. We should all queue and wait in turns."

At the Twedaase JHS centre in the Ashiboi electoral area, a number of people were seen restless in a queue.

They complained that those who could not fill the forms on their own should be allowed to do so in other to make the process fast.



Mr Jerry Ankomah, District Registration Officer for Tema East, told the GNA that his team was working hard to start printing the cards as they were preparing the machines as at 0920 hours.

Mr Ankomah said all the 19 centres in Tema East were yet to start printing cards, assuring residents that those who did not get their cards printed out immediately would have them later.
