German NGO supports Ghana's development

Accra (Greater Accra), 22 Jan. '99 - Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAF), a German non-governmental organisation, has earmarked 480,000 Deutsche Marks (about 750 million cedis) to support its programmes in Ghana this year. The amount will be spent on strengthening democracy, promotion of the rule of law and protection of human rights, among other programmes, Mr Martin Wilde, KAF Resident Representative in Ghana, announced at a meeting with media practitioners in Accra today. He mentioned Christian Mothers' Association, Association for Small Scale Industries (ASSI), Ecumenical Association for Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development, and the Credit Union Association as some of the beneficiaries. The others are the Trades Union Congress, Ghana Union Traders Association and the Diocesan Development Offices of the Catholic Church, district assemblies and NGOs. Mr Wilde said 100,000 Deutsche Marks has been made available to ASSI while the Christian Mothers' Association will receive 130,000 Deutsche Marks. He said in 1999 a series of seminars aimed at improving the capacity of civil society and fostering closer collaboration between the state and the public, improvement of police-civilian relations, participation of citizens in the Judicial system, and the role of traditional leaders in the democratic dispensation will be organised.
