The nation of Ghana has, on August 15, 2025, converged at Black Star Square in Accra to bid farewell to the remaining six of the eight statesmen who lost their lives in a helicopter crash.
On August 6, 2025, a Ghana Air Force Harbin Z-9 military helicopter crashed into a forested mountainside in the Adansi Akrofuom District, in the Ashanti Region, killing all eight people on board.
The helicopter was en route from the Kotoka International Airport in Accra to Obuasi for an event focused on combating illegal mining.
The deceased include Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Minister of Defence; Alhaji Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister of Environment, Science, and Technology; Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Dr Samuel Sarpong, 1st Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC); Samuel Aboagye, Deputy Director-General of NADMO; and three crew members: Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Mane-Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
‘You always asked me, what will you do when I’m not around’ – Omane Boamah’s widow recounts
Two of the victims: Dr Murtala and Alhaji Muniru, were buried earlier on Sunday, August 10, 2025, in line with Islamic rites.
Now lying in their individual caskets draped in Ghana’s red, gold, green, and black star, the six remaining victims are surrounded by a gathering of national leaders, families, and fellow citizens who have come from near and far to bid the fallen heroes final goodbyes.
Also standing by at the venue are six luxury cars lined up to convey the caskets to the Military Cemetery, where the first two were also buried, for their interments.
