Central Regional Propaganda Secretary for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Allotey Jacobs, has backed the demolition of a toll booth and a security post erected at the Okponglo end of the University of Ghana (UG) under the aegis of the National Security.
National Security (NS) Coordinator, Col. (rtd.) Larry Gbevlo Lartey ordered the demolition of the yet-to-completed tollbooth constructed by the university. Some have, however, questioned the authority of the National Security to carry out the controversial exercise.
The Academic Board of the University of Ghana has also directed management to take legal action against Col. Larry Gbevlo-Lartey (Rtd) for the unlawfully demolishing.
Speaking to the issue on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo, Allotey Jacobs, who announced his intention to contest the party’s Central Regional Chairmanship position when nominations open, pointed out that the university cannot be acting as if they are a law unto themselves.
He sided with the National Security Coordinator’s assertion that the tollbooth was of a public nuisance.
“It was absolute nuisance,” Allotey Jacob said.
“Gbevlo is doing what is expected of him; he was acting within the power vested in him. The crux of the matter is; is lawlessness creeping into our society? Are we above the law? It is like there is no law and we can do whatever we like...University of Ghana is a community within a community and so they cannot isolate themselves and do what they want. They should have held discussions with the Minister of Roads and Highways but they didn’t do that…the law must take its course and that is why Gbevlo Lartey did what he did,” the outspoken NDC stalwart added.
