Galamsey obstructs operations of Bonte Mines

Jeniso, (Ash), April 12, GNA - Illegal gold mining also known as galamsey, by some inhabitants of communities within the concession of the Bonte Gold Mines Company, around the Jeniso area of the Amansie-West District, is threatening the smooth operations of the company.

The concession covers a number of communities including Jeniso, Esaase, Tetrem, Mpatoam, Bonteso, Aboabo, Akanraniase and Adobewora. Mr. Paul Forkuo Nuamah, Mines Superintendent of the company, was speaking when the Minister of Environment, Science and Technology, Mr. Cletus Avoka, inspected facilities at the mines at Jeniso on Monday.

The Minister expressed concern about the number of deep trenches in the Jeniso area of the concession, that had been sunk by the galamsey operators some of whom were seen busily mining.

Mr. Nuamah said the concession though legally acquired the company has no option than to cope up with the stiff competition presented by the youth in the area.

The Mines Superintendent told the Minister that all attempts including the use of the security agencies and dialogue, to put a halt to their activities have failed.

Mr. Nuamah said the company has reluctantly decided to co-exist with the illegal miners to guarantee the safety of the lives of its staff and equipment. Mr Avoka condemned the state of affairs, which has contributed to loss of state revenue and degrades the environment.

He advised the management of the Company to liase with the chiefs and opinion leaders to address the problem.
