Gaddafi receives rousing welcome in Tamale

A large number of people on Thursday lined up along the major streets of Tamale to cheer visiting Libyan Leader, Muammar Al Gaddafi, who travelled by road through Burkina Fasso to Ghana.

News About the visit of the Libyan leader started spreading in the municipality by 08:00 hours and by noon anxious residents have taken up positions in all open spaces along the Tamale-Bolgatanga road despite the hot sun to catch a glimpse of him. At about 1830 hours when the long convoy was spotted, the police had a hectic time dispersing the jubilant crowd that had besieged the road to have a better view of him.

Muslims among the crowd were heard chanting "Allahu Akbah" (GOD IS GREAT) while others were carrying Gaddafi's portrait. The Northern Regional Minister, Alhaji Seidu Iddi and supporters of various political parties dressed in party colours and playing brass band music were among the crowd.
