The Management of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) will temporarily shut down the Barekese Water Treatment Plant from Monday, March 17 to Wednesday, March 19, 2025, for an improvement exercise.

The temporary shutdown will enable the GWCL to facilitate the installation of new interconnection pipelines and foot valves at a strategic location at the Suame Roundabout to boost water supply in the metropolis.

This information was contained in a statement issued and signed by the GWCL and copied to GhanaWeb on Thursday, March 13, 2025.

"The Management of Ghana Water Limited (GWL), Ashanti Region, hereby notifies the public of a scheduled shutdown of the Barekese Water Treatment Plant from Monday, 17th to Wednesday, 19th of March 2025.

"This temporary shutdown is necessary to facilitate the installation of new interconnection pipelines and foot valves at a vantage point at the Suame Roundabout, which is expected to boost the water supply to the metropolis," the statement read.

The GWCL apologised to the affected areas for the inconvenience the exercise may cause and assured the public of their commitment to working diligently within the estimated timeframe to restore water supply to the affected communities.

The activity aligns with GWCL’s commitment to enhancing the water supply capacity from the Barekese Water Treatment Plant to improve service delivery and address supply challenges in the metropolis.

The affected communities include Offinso, the entire Kumasi Metropolis, and its surrounding areas. The GWCL urged residents to bear with them during the shutdown period.

The management also reminded essential service providers, especially hospitals and schools in the affected areas, to ensure they have adequate water storage for the period.

"The management of GWL deeply regrets the inconvenience that the interruption will cause but pleads with consumers to bear with the situation since the project is aimed at improving services to the public," the statement added.
