GUIDE EDITORIAL HOW NOT TO ABORT THE COUP IN SIERRA LEONE!

As at Tuesday (June 3 ) morning, troops of the supposed super power of Africa, Nigeria, have had to, with their tails in between their legs, retreate in the face of counter attacks form the Sierra Leonean Military and their new found RUF allies.

Nigeria, typical of their attitude towards Ghana in such military adventures, did not inform Ghana that it was going to resort to force to reverse the coup in Sierra Leone.

Tuesday, June 3, issue of the Ghanaian Times carried a GNA story of an interview with the acting foreign Minister, Kwamena Ahwoi; quoting the Minister as saying: "We have all along insisted on a negotiated settlement, the attack by the Nigerian Navy came as a surprise." That sums up whether Ghana was in the know.

This paper is in principle supportive of an international effort to crush the coup in Sierra Leone, and is prepared to endorse an ECOWAS sponsored initiative in that direction but not an exclusively Nigeria- inspired internvention as appears to be happening on the ground in Sierra Leone at the moment.
