GTMC workers demonstrate in Tema.

Hundreds of workers of the Ghana Textile Manufacturing Company (GTMC), today mounted a demonstration in the principal streets of Tema to demand the release of some of their colleagues who were arrested by the Police last week in connection with an assault case on the two deputy ministers of Employment and Social Welfare, Mr. Austin Gamey and Mrs. Ama Benyiwa Doe. The workers carried placards some of which read, "Arrest all of us", among others. The demonstration attracted seven land rovers full of armed policemen. Speaking to the workers, the local Industrial and Commercial Workers Union chairman, Mr. Wilson Agarna told them that they cannot assault the ministers and think they can go away with it, adding that the only solution now is to use diplomatic means to solve the problem which is being handled by the leadership of the Trades Union Congress (TUC). It will be recalled that last week, a number of workers of GTMC besieged the offices of the ministry of employment and social welfare to demand their bargaining certificate and also asking that they be allowed to join any union of their choice. In the process they were alleged to have assaulted the two deputy ministers of the ministry.
