GMTF to build three advanced cardiology centers at KBTH, KATH, and TTH

The Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF) is set to establish three advanced cardiology centres aimed at strengthening specialised heart care services across Ghana.

The announcement was made by the Administrator of the Fund, Adwoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku, during the Government Accountability Series held on Monday, May 11, 2026.

The proposed facilities will be located at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, and Tamale Teaching Hospital.

“One of our significant achievements is the construction of three state-of-the-art Cardiology Centres located at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, and Tamale Teaching Hospital,” she was quoted as saying in a report by adomonline.com on May 11, 2026.

Darko-Opoku explained that the centres are designed to significantly expand Ghana’s national capacity for cardio-vascular interventions.

“These centres are designed to significantly enhance Ghana’s national capacity for cardiology and vascular interventions,” she added.

Each facility will be equipped with catheterisation laboratories, hybrid theatres, intensive care units, consulting rooms, dedicated oxygen systems, on-site pharmacies, and diagnostic laboratories.

She further noted that a nationwide assessment of 21 health facilities revealed significant gaps in specialised medical equipment, including only two MRI machines, five mammogram machines, and two public-sector radiotherapy machines currently available in the country.

According to her, these findings highlight the urgent need for sustained investment in advanced healthcare infrastructure to improve access to specialised treatment across Ghana.
