GIS to campaign against illegal migration

The Migration Information Bureau of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) will soon embark on a series of activities against illegal migration by Ghanaians, Chief Superintendent Mark Asamoah Boakye, head of the Bureau, has revealed.

According to him, on a daily basis, some Ghanaians living abroad are subjected to harsh treatment largely because they make their way there through illegal means.

Speaking in an interview with Chief Jerry Forson, host of Ghana Yensom on Accra100.5FM on Tuesday July 4, Chief Supt Boakye said: “Some people feel they cannot make ends meet without travelling out of the country. Some of those who travel are even artisans in Ghana but they still want to travel.

“We will not tell them not to travel but if they want to travel they should seek the right advice from us.

“Our offices are open to every Ghanaian, don’t sell your properties because you want to travel, seek advice from us, learn about the place you intend travelling to, the language they speak, the nearest embassy, so that you will not land yourself in trouble.

“Kindly come to the Ghana Immigration Service office at Ako Adjei in Accra and ask for the Migration Information Bureau. We will welcome you to our offices and even show you video clips of how people are suffering because of illegal migration. After that you will make your personal decision whether you still want to embark on the trip or not.

“We are going to embark on a vigorous awareness campaign on radio, door to door, in vehicles, to educate Ghanaians.”
