GIS officer killed, another injured in Gbintri checkpoint attack

An officer of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) was killed and another was seriously injured in an armed attack at the Gbintri inland checkpoint in the North East Region.

According to a report by citinewsroom.com on October 3, the incident occurred around 1:30 AM on Friday when unidentified assailants opened fire on officers stationed at the checkpoint in the East Mamprusi Municipality.

Assistant Immigration Control Officer II (AICOII) Rafiq Mohammed was killed instantly from gunshot wounds.

His colleague, Oppong Daniel, also an AICOII, sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving treatment at the Baptist Medical Centre in Nalerigu, the report added.

Police investigators recovered AK-47 shell casings at the scene, along with a GIS service rifle with the registration number GH/GIS/HQACN 668516-1646.

A joint response team, led by Superintendent Francis Brobbey, the Gambaga Municipal Police Commander, and DIS Moro Tanko Mohammed, the North Regional Intelligence Officer of the GIS, was dispatched to the scene.

Authorities stated, "Investigations have commenced to establish the circumstances of the attack and to track down the perpetrators," the report added.

Officials have assured the public that further developments will be made as the investigation progresses.
