GIJ Homecoming Evening slated for February 23

The alumni of the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ) has slated February 23 for a historic homecoming to mark the Pre-launch of the GIJ Alumni Association.

The homecoming will also be used to rally support for the school and interact with the student population and to encourage them.

A statement issued by the Students Representative Council announced plans to host a homecoming event for past students, teaching and support staff to unite the various generations to plan the University’s 60th Anniversary come next year.

The events which is been spearheaded by the Public Affairs Office of GIJ, the various Alumni year group representatives, as well as the SRC, is to bring together all generations to network as well as discussed the progress of the institute.

Esi Hammond, an old student and planning committee member of this year’s homecoming event dubbed “Uniting Generations for GIJ ” said the event would be held on the school premises at Ridge.

She reminded all past students on how important it is for them to contribute towards efforts to make their alma mater a greater school.

The gathering, she said “would offer the opportunity to all past staff and students from the 70s, 80s, and 90s to come together to support our Alma matter as the school prepares to celebrate its 60th anniversary next year”.

GIJ can boast of successful Broadcasters such Kweku Sekyi- Addo, formerly of Joy FM, BBC, Ghana Chamber of Telecom and currently the Board Chairman of the National Communications Authority, Award Winning and Internationally celebrated Investigative Journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas, Mannaseh Azure Awuni, Aku Banasseh, Kate Addo, Affail Monney among others.

The Ghana Institute of Journalism, formerly The Ghana School of Journalism, was officially opened on Monday, 16th October 1959, by the then Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Mr. Kofi Baako.

The school was established by the Kwame Nkrumah government to provide training in journalism toward the development of a patriotic cadre of journalists to play an active role in the emancipation of the African continent.

GIJ offers a Two-year diploma in Communication Studies, A four-year B.A. in Communication Studies, Two-Year B.A. in Communication Studies (Top-Up and Weekend) for GIJ diploma graduates and One-Year M.A. in Journalism, Public Relations, Media Management And Development Communication.

The Institute also offers short courses for practitioners and the general public in communication-related areas such as; Radio and Television Presentation, Public Relations, Advertising and Marketing, Advanced Advertising, Advanced Public Relations, Advanced Communications, Advance Marketing, Broadcast Journalism, Action and Strategic Plan etc.
