Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, Majority Chief Whip, has criticised the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), claiming the association is no longer as relevant or credible as it once was.

Speaking in an interview on Channel One TV on February 17, 2026, Dafeamekpor dismissed suggestions that his decision to establish the Law Society of Ghana amounts to an attempt to weaken the GBA.

According to him, the association has, over time, aligned itself with the agenda of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“GBA has crippled itself; I haven’t. For some time now, GBA has converted itself into a supporter of the NPP agenda. GBA has lost its glory as a professional body,” he stated.

He further argued that the association’s actions in the 1990s targeting the late former President Jerry John Rawlings and his administration were politically motivated and aligned with the interests of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“In the 90’s, all the things the GBA did against the late former President Jerry Rawlings and his government were to advance the course of NPP. Some of those activities led to the NPP winning the 2000 elections,” he alleged.

According to Dafeamekpor, the GBA has repeatedly adopted what he described as an anti-government stance whenever the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has been in office.

“The GBA was vociferous anytime the NDC was in government, in an anti-government way. GBA has lost its glory and lustre as a professional body,” he said.

He added that the Law Society of Ghana, which he founded, has enrolled more than 2,000 members and has begun issuing licences to new lawyers entering the profession.
