Ghana International School has organized its annual United Nations and National Costume Day celebration on the theme, "Kofi Annan: Celebrating the diplomat, Nobel laureate and Global Citizen".

The event brought together people from different backgrounds to celebrate diversity through various presentations.

This year’s event which was dedicated to celebrating the life of the late Kofi Annan, former UN Secretary-General was climaxed with interesting and impressive performances which highlighted the power of positive influence and global citizenship.

Speaking at the event, the Principal of GIS, Dr. Mrs. Mary Ashun said, the late Kofi Annan was an epitome of peace.

“Kofi Annan had a quiet dignity that spoke volumes at various moments in his work as Secretary General of the United Nations and he believed that every disagreement could be resolved”.

According to her, the Nobel laureate and global citizen, Kofi Annan represented Ghana well on the world stage because of the good fundamentals he received as a child.

“Kofi Annan went to school in Ghana, reminding us that we have what it takes in Ghana to raise competent global leaders and with the values he learnt growing up, he represented us on the world stage which reminds us that the values we teach as educators and parents are critical to our children becoming global influencers” she said.

The guest speaker, Her Excellency Mrs. Heather Cameron, Canadian High Commissioner to Ghana on her part said, the late Kofi Annan listened to the list of things that brought the world together and he focused on the common ground to build unity and peace in the world.

According to her, Kofi Annan as the UN General-Secretary promoted acceptance, diversity and respect for human rights and even after he left the UN he continued to work as a global citizen to address pressing humanitarian issues and advance good governance.

“Kofi Annan’s legacy is felt everywhere and his legacy lives on” she said

She said, Kofi Annan focused on protecting the most vulnerable and he devoted his life to challenge those who abused rights

The exemplary life of Kofi Annan cannot be over emphasized, she added.
