A Senior Lecturer at the University of Ghana Business School, Dr Jabril Mohammed, has raised concerns about the long-term sustainability of the MahamaCares initiative.

According to Dr Mohammed, relying solely on donations may not be sufficient to ensure the program’s longevity.

Speaking on the JoyNews AM Show on April 30, 2025, he emphasised the need for a substantial and consistent funding base to guarantee the initiative’s success for generations to come.

“The initiative should not be run solely on donations because it will not last. It should have substantial funding to help sustain it for generations to come,” he stated.

Dr Mohammed’s comments underscored the importance of securing stable financial backing for initiatives aimed at supporting vulnerable populations.

He stressed that the sustainability of social intervention programs like MahamaCares depends on consistent and long-term funding.

As a solution, Dr Mohammed suggested exploring alternative funding sources, such as allocating a portion of the national budget to the initiative and repurposing the COVID-19 levy into a health emergency fund.

“We can repurpose the COVID-19 levy into a health emergency fund and allocate a portion of the annual budget to the MahamaCares initiative to ensure its sustainability,” he proposed.

These measures, he argued, would establish a more reliable financial foundation for the program’s long-term impact.
