Fresh students officially admitted to KNUST

Kumasi, Sept 27, GNA - The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) admitted only 4,861 students to pursue various degree programmes this academic year out of the 11,836 students who applied for entry.

Professor Kwesi Andam, Vice-Chancellor of the KNUST who announced this said the figure indicates that only about 36 percent of students who qualified to enter the university were admitted.

Professor Andam was speaking at the matriculation ceremony of the KNUST in Kumasi on Saturday.

The ceremony also witnessed the matriculation of the first batch of Bachelor of Arts (BA) law students numbering 81 to the university. The Vice-Chancellor attributed the low number of students admitted to the university this year to the inadequate faculty facilities and limited residential accommodation.

Prof Andam also announced that as its modest contribution towards making university education more accessible to less endowed Senior Secondary Schools the KNUST admitted 59 students from deprived schools in all the 10 regions of the country.

"Next year we intend to extend this number beyond 100 students from the less endowed schools", he assured.

Prof Andam stated that the mission of the KNUST is not only to turn out graduates who are academically and professionally competent in their fields of endeavour, but also to ensure that such graduates are healthy. The Vice-Chancellor said in this regard, the university encourages every student to register and study at least one sporting course in addition to his or her programme of study while at the university. Prof Andam mentioned some of the disciplines sports students could undertake as table tennis, lawn tennis, jogging, women's football and swimming.
