"Bid to penetrate 'no-go' Volta Region...NPP invades Volta Region, U.K. based member promises assistance", is a screamer of a headline on the front page of the Free Press. The paper says the expected exit of President Jerry Rawlings from the presidential race in the year 2000 general elections, will open the Volta Region for a fierce competition between the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The Free Press says without the tribal-inclined pattern of voting, there is no way that the region would continue to be the "World Bank" for the NDC.

According to the paper, Dr Tony Osei, a prominent member of the London branch of the NPP has taken the initiative to adopt the Volta Region NPP and solicit for material and financial assistance for the members to conduct the year 2000 election campaign without much difficulty. GRI

In another front page story, the Free Press reports that a senior serving officer of the Ghana Armed Forces who was demoted two ranks from Warrant Officer Class One to staff Sergeant, after being found guilty by a court martial of sexually assaulting the daughter of a subordinate officer, has appealed against his sentence.
