Fraudster jailed 24 months by a Kumasi court

Kumasi, Nov 16, GNA - A Kumasi Circuit court on Wednesday convicted Oppong Kennedy, unemployed, to 24 months' imprisonment for defrauding a geologist to the tune of 1.3 million cedis under the pretext of registering his vehicle.

Kennedy was convicted on his plea.

Prosecuting, Assistant Superintendent of Police Regina Kesewaa of the Ashanti Region Police Command told the court that on October 19 Mr. Richard Agyei-Gyimah, a geologist who resides in Dunkwa-on-Offin, went to the offices of the Drivers' Vehicle and Licensing Authority (DVLA) to have his car licensed.

She said Mr. Agyei-Gyimah fell ill and the convict, who was already known to him, offered to register the car for him. Mr. Agyei-Gyimah paid the amount the convict demanded and Kennedy promised to register the car within one week. But when he collected the registration documents from the convict, he detected that the number plate and documents did not look genuine. A check revealed that the number plate given to him, AS 9476 X, had already been issued to one Madam Kafui for her motorbike. Mr. Agyei-Gyimah then took the fake documents and the number plate to the Asawase Police Station in Kumasi where he made a report leading to the arrest of Kennedy.
