Former Minister Petitions National Security

The former Greater Accra regional Minister and Member of Parliament for Korle-Klottey constituency, Nii Armah Ashietey, has petitioned the National Security to investigate ACP Angwubutoge Awuni, the Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of the Ghana Police Service, for unlawfully ‘arresting’ him.

Hon Nii Armah Ashietey was arrested and briefly detained for allegedly interfering in the ongoing biometric registration exercise in his constituency last Thursday.

He was however released after he called the IGP Paul Tawiah Quyae to report of his arrest. He has also threatened to take legal action against ACP Awuni for ordering his “boys” (Policemen) to manhandle him.

He has also served notice that he will be petition the Interior Ministry on Wednesday to investigate the issue “to establish the truth.”

In an interview on Joy FM on Tuesday, he said “I’m inviting the authorities to investigate the matter because the truth must be told. Awuni said I tried to resist arrest which is incorrect. I never argued with him or stopped the process of registration. These are all false,”

He added: “I’m lost for words because I thought he is an honest person… The police work under the Interior Ministry and therefore I think that’s the right place to go. I’m also talking to my lawyers and will take the possible legal action.

According to him, “they brutalized me and manhandled me. It is not true that I threatened to have him dismissed. He said I can take him anywhere because he is doing his professional duty.
