The Forestry Commission (FC) has laid to rest Raphael Ganyo, a Resource Guard with the Wildlife Division, at Adorzekope near Mafi-Kumasi in the Volta Region. The funeral drew family members, colleagues, and government officials to honour his life and service.
Ganyo died after being shot by a poacher while on patrol duty at the Zitoe Camp within the Kalakpa Resource Reserve. His death highlights the growing dangers faced by Forestry Commission personnel in protecting Ghana’s forests and wildlife resources.
In recognition of his service and sacrifice, the Commission posthumously promoted him to the rank of Chief Resource Guard. The Zitoe Camp has also been renamed Raphael Ganyo Camp in his honour.
The Commission further announced support for the bereaved family, including employment opportunities for two relatives and a donation of GH¢50,000.
Speaking at the ceremony, Dr Joseph Boakye, Executive Director of the Wildlife Division, said the interventions were part of efforts to honour Ganyo’s memory and support his family during their loss.
In a related interview, Dr Hugh C. A. Brown, Chief Executive Officer of the Forestry Commission, stressed the urgent need to improve resources, training, and protective equipment for frontline staff, including bulletproof vests.
He noted that beyond Ganyo’s death, the Forestry Services Division has recorded two other fatalities and about 33 injuries among personnel in the line of duty.
Dr Brown appealed for public support for the Commission’s work, describing it as inherently risky. He also cited challenges including inadequate personnel and limited logistics such as vehicles and motorbikes.
He further disclosed that the Commission is in consultations to review Act 571 to secure paramilitary status, which would provide legal backing for officers to carry appropriate arms for their protection.
The ceremony was attended by officials from the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, the Forestry Commission Board, executive directors of the Commission, and other senior staff.
