A 26-year-old Ghanaian footballer has been handed a seven-year prison sentence for impregnating a 12-year-old girl.

This was after the accused, Derrick Tetteh, pleaded guilty to the charge of defilement when brought before an Accra Circuit Court.

The prosecutor, Chief Inspector Kofi Atimbire told the court that the complainant in the matter is the victim‘s uncle.

Tetteh is said to have met the victim in June last year and went on to propose love to her.

The victim ignorantly accepted his proposal and both began having a sexual relationship, the prosecution said.

The footballer finally got his 12-year-old girlfriend pregnant, although both of them were not initially aware.

The Prosecution said the victim started falling sick frequently, compelling the complainant to take her to the hospital for treatment.

It was at the hospital that a doctor confirmed that the victim is six months pregnant.

When questioned on who is responsible, the victim named Tetteh as the one who impregnated her.

The matter was subsequently reported to the Domestic Violence and Victim’s Support Unit of the Ghana Police Service at Nungua.

During the initial interrogation, Tetteh admitted having sex with the victim but denied being responsible for the pregnancy.

However, the 26-year-old footballer later pleaded guilty to the charge of defilement at an Accra Circuit Court.

Presiding judge, Rita Abrokwah Doko convicted him on his own plea and sentenced him to seven years imprisonment.
