Fluctuations Cause Fire At Maamobi

Property worth millions of cedis was burnt to ashes when five bedrooms at 'Quarters' in Maamobi caught fire last week.

The fire is alleged to have been caused by terrible power fluctuations in the area over a period of days.

A resident said smoke was seen coming out of one of the rooms. Before an alarm could be raised, the smoke turned into a real fire, spread to other rooms and raged for almost two hours. It was brought under control by neighbours and the Ghana National Fire Service, who arrived late.

Property destroyed included, 40 pieces of plywood and 100 corrugated iron sheets to be used for constructing a kiosk, several pieces of cloth, jewellery and over ?3.7 million.

Some of those affected are putting up with friends, while others have had to sleep outside.

Dr. Mustapha Ahmed, Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East, who visited the victims at Maamobi, said Ghanaians should call the Fire Service as soon as there is a fire outbreak.

He asked the Electricity Company of Ghana to check fluctuations to prevent such occurrences and appealed to them to come to identify the cause.

Dr. Mustapha reiterated his call for the supply of a fire tender to the area, which he said had been rejected by the ECG.

He asked ECG to undertake a survey of Maamobi to find the illegal connections.

He said the National Association of Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has been asked to come to the aid of the affected victims.
