Flood alert: Accra drowns in heavy rains again

Information reaching GhanaWeb indicates that some areas in Ghana’s capital Accra are flooding as heavy rains continue unabated Sunday evening.

Reports say most of the principal streets in Accra are flooded and unmotorable as commercial and private vehicles are trapped in the deluge.

Most of the drivers, GhanaWeb learned, have parked their vehicles on the inner and outer pavements to prevent their vehicles from being carried away by the flood.

Flood-prone areas, including Awoshie, Nima, Kwashiebu, Alajo and surrounding areas and residents are struggling to evacuate their homes for safety.

Residents of these areas are advised to take the necessary precautions and stay indoors.

More than 150 people on June 3 died in a devastating petrol station blast during heavy flooding in Accra.

The disaster prompted President John Mahama to call three days of national mourning over the "catastrophic" loss of life.

The fire hit a filling station causing an explosion at the pumps and killed dozens of people seeking shelter from torrential rains and widespread flooding in the area.
