Five narcotic suspects escape from cell

Accra April 24, GNA - Five suspects held in custody over drug deals on Monday grabbed a Policeman giving them a loaf of bread, hit him till he became unconscious and fled from Greater Accra Regional Tribunal cell in a Hollywood style.

The suspects grabbed the outstretched arm of the cop, twisted and hit his head against the wall, sped out of the cell and scaled the court wall and raced towards the Reviera Beach and were not seen again. Kofi Tawiah, another suspect who was also being held in the same cell to be taken to court on a different charge and took advantage of the jailbreak to run away was shot in the leg by a cop on duty in the area when the alarm was raised. Tawiah has since been sent to the hospital for treatment.

The assaulted Policeman was later resuscitated. Briefing journalists, Henry Quarter Papafio, an eye witness, said at about 1210 hours they spotted a woman, who went to purchase bread nearby and handed it over to the Police on guard.

In the Police guard's bid to hand over the bread to an inmate, two of them held his neck and head and banged it against the cells gate. Mr Papafio said the Police guard fell unconscious but other officers quickly raised the alarm and chased them but to no avail. The Police officers, however, shot Kofi Tawiah. Security personnel, who escorted the suspects to the cells, declined to comment on the issue.

An inspection at the cells showed that the cell was in good condition. 24 April 06
