Mr Isaac Adjei Mensah, Deputy Minister of Roads and Highways and Member of Parliament for Wassa East, on Sunday advised national service personnel to accept postings to public sector institutions.
He expressed dissatisfaction that some national service personnel are refusing postings to Ministries, Departments and Agencies because of low remuneration.
Mr Mensah was speaking at a day’s Western Regional Capacity Building Workshop for members of the Tertiary Education Institution Network (TEIN) of National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Takoradi.
He said: “Service personnel must accept postings to the public service as a national duty to support the government to improve conditions in the country.”
“Service personnel who work in the public sector would be able to build their capacity through training,” Mr Mensah said.
He urged corporate entities to make deliberate efforts to employ service personnel after their period of duty because of the unemployment situation in the country.
Mr James Gunu, Akatsi North District Chief Executive, who spoke on: “The Innovative TEIN Programmes and the Funding Sources: The Way Forward,” said TEIN would become nothing more than a mere appendage of the NDC if its gallant members do not crave a new paradigm that would make them more useful to the party and the society.
He said increasing globalisation and its resultant competition means that any country, society, business or association that aspires to realise its set targets or objectives must change from the old ways of doing things.
Mr Gunu said aspirations are mere fantasies if new and better and time tested means of doings things differently in keeping with the changing times are not explored.
He said: “By extension, any political party that purports to have better alternatives to address the plight of the electorate and not rehash old and increasingly deficient strategies.”
Mr Gunu said a stronger and more resilient TEIN must depart from the passive and reactionary posture characteristic of some student political bodies.
He said TEIN members must be well informed about the policies and programmes of the NDC in order to influence policy and shape public opinion.
Mr James Kofi Fonu Kpatakpa, Deputy National Organiser of the NDC, spoke of the social democratic ideology of the party and asked members of TEIN to embrace the principles.
He said the NDC espouses equality, freedom, equity and justice and this is why it is promoting education to give as many people as possible the opportunity to develop themselves and assist in national development.
Mr Kpatakpa said people who join the NDC must know what the party stands for and not to become disillusioned when they do not become rich or gain appointments.
