Release Wontumi now - Dr. Tuffour

Bernard Antwi Bosiako (Chairman Wontumi) - NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Bosiako (Chairman Wontumi) - NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman

A member of the Council of Elders of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Amoako Tuffour is demanding for immediate release of the embattled Ashanti Regional Chairman, Mr. Bernard Antwi Bosiako who was kept in police custody for allegedly assaulting a public officer.

Dr. Tuffour described the detention of Chairman Wontumi as he is popularly called as unfair, and an act perpetrated by the ruling government, the Ashanti Regional Police Command and the Electoral Commission to frustrate the NPP in the ongoing limited registration exercise.

Dr. Tuffour said he cannot understand why Chairman Wontumi should be the only person arrested and has thus described the action by the police as bias.

In an interview with Kwame Tutu on Frontline on Rainbow Radio, Dr. Amoako Tuffour said he is of the view that, the arrest was instigated by government.

He posited that, assault is a bail able offence hence they expect Chairman Wontumi to be released from police custody.

He charged the police to expedite action on the case since any delays will create the impression that government is massaging their hands in the case.

Chairman Wontumi was refused bail on Tuesday by the Police; a situation which forced some party supporters to storm the police station to protest against his detention.

The supporters in the company of leading members of the party kept vigil at the Kumasi Central Police station demanding for the release of Wontumi.

Commenting on the issue, Dr. Amoako Tuffour said the strategy adopted by government to massage the police will not see the light.

According to him, it will be extremely unfair for anyone to fault the Chairman if the person do have full details of how the incident occurred.

He told the host that if indeed Chairman Wontumi assaulted the MP, then something may have triggered it hence the need for the police to conduct proper investigation into the matter.

He admonished party supporters to remain calm but vigilant and not be intimidated by what is going on as everything remains under control.

Meanwhile information coming in from Kumasi indicate that, Chairman Wontumi is currently in court.
