Fire gutters distillers' depot at Agona Swedru

Agona Swedru (C/R), Dec. 9, GNA - Furniture and some products of Agona Duakwa Distillers Company and the Ghana Guinness Brewery Limited were destroyed when fire guttered a depot serving as their warehouse at Agona Swedru on Saturday.

Briefing newsmen at Agona Swedru Mr. Henry Talliskis, Agona District Officer of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), said four workers of the Agona Duakwa Distillers received serious burns are on admission at the Agona Swedru Government Hospital.

He said the accident occurred when raw alcohol workers of the Duakwa Distillers were discharging caught fire from a cigarette one of them was smoking.

He said it took a combined team of Fire Service personnel from Agona Swedru and Winneba about six hours to bring the fire under control. Mr. Talliskis said the absence of water hydrant at Agona Swedru made it difficult for Fire Service personnel to effectively fight the fire and appealed for rehabilitation of the two hydrants that had been out of service for some time now.
