A gas tanker that toppled over and fell in a ditch on the Accra-bound section of the Tema motorway, has left motorists in panic with fears of an explosion.

The tanker, believed to have fallen on its side at Wednesday dawn, was unattended to as at 8am.

Motorists plying the road have raised concerns over a possible explosion if there should be a spark anywhere close to the toppled tanker which is believed to still contain fuel.

It would be recalled that a gas explosion disaster occurred on Saturday, October 7 killing seven people and injuring 132 others at Atomic Junction.

Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, who visited the accident victims at the 37 Military Hospital, promised that government will put in measures to ensure proper handling of fuel in the country for public safety.

He said the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Energy Ministry, Ghana Fire Service and all relevant stakeholders will “be involved as we put this new policy in place and we are going to move quite quickly, it’s not going to be one that you wait for weeks for it to happen, it’s going to happen relatively quickly, we pretty much have an idea of what we need to do in terms of policy…”
