On June 12, 2006, the Black Stars made their debut in the FIFA World Cup against the Azzurris of Italy at the HDI-Arena in Hannover.

Facing the eventual world champions at the 2006 FIFA World Cup, Ghana knew they were up against football royalty and paraded a strong midfield to face the 4 times world champions.

Ghana paraded Michael Essien, Sulley Muntari and captain Stephen Appiah to face Italy's 4-man midfield of Andrea Pirlo, Daniele De Rossi, Gennaro Gattuso and Francesco Totti.
