Residents of Agbobloshie are living in fear after the announcement made by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) which stated the commencement of the demolition exercise. Adding that, over 5,000 unauthorized structures will be demolished.
These structures in the communities; Agbogloshie, Sodom and Gomorrah are mostly built with wood.
Mitsughana.com confirms that a team of taskforce from AMA stormed the community on Wednesday to mark several houses which would be demolished during their exercise.
They reiterated that, the affected victims have been given a month eviction notice to vacate the place and on the other hand, risk themselves of being forced out of the place.
Some residents who have lived in the community over 70 years were in a state of anxiety since they have no place to go when they move out of the place.
“The government should relocate us if it is going ahead to pull down our houses, even foreigners have been given a place to live in, what about we Ghanaians who live here?”
In June, 2015, the AMA embarked on a similar demolition exercise at Sodom and Gomorrah, a slum near Agbobloshie where tens of thousands of structures deemed illegal were pulled down.
The angry victims responded by staging a five hour chaotic demonstration which resulted in blocking the major streets in the capital as well as burning of car tyres in the middle of roads.
Some police and media men had to run for their lives as the irate youth chased them with machetes, sticks and stones.
In May, 2017, the AMA also served a notice of an intent to remove structures without permit around the Odow River, Korle Lagoon, Old Fadama, among others and threatened to prosecute persons responsible for constructing such structures.
Mitsughana.com calls on government to take a second look at the situation to avert a repetition of the June 2015 bloody incident in the country.
