Fantastic Akwamusec wows audience to win Paul Ansah SHS quiz

Akwamuman Senior High School on Thursday won this year’s edition of the Paul Asare Ansah SHS quiz with an astounding win over six other contenders held at the assembly hall of the Anum Senior High School in the eastern region.

Winning a trophy is a stupendous moment in the life of any student and the heroics of the three final year science students; Nkrumah Tambe Sylvia, Donkor Eugene and Bali David have given Akwamusec the bragging rights over their colleagues in the 3rd edition of the competition.

The 2018 runners-up stopped defending champions, Akosombo International School from making it two trophies in two years.

But the true weight of this achievement is the commanding lead and supremacy exhibited by the champions from round one till the fourth and final round.

Akwamuman battled six other determined schools who were bent on causing an upset, but they would have none of it, accumulating a whopping 78 points with the defending champions Akosombo International School in distant second place but with an impressive 62 points while hosts Anum took the third position with 46 points.

Others included 4th placed Apegusu SHS who polled 45 points, 2017 champions, Boso SHTS at 5th position with 43 points and Adjena SHS and Learning Field International SHS with 34 and 29 points respectively to pick the 6th and 7th positions.

The event which was wholly sponsored by the NPP parliamentary candidate for Asuogyaman, Paul Asare Ansah presented mouth-watering prizes to the winning school including a trophy, Ghc2,000 for the school, Ghc 500.00 for the teachers who prepared the contesting students and three brand new 32” flat screen television sets for the three contesting students.

The second position took home Ghc 1500.00 and Ghs 300.00 with the third-placed school also grabbing 1200 and Ghc 200 for the schools and teachers respectively.

The fourth to seventh positions equally grabbed consolation prizes of Ghc 500 for the school and Ghc 200 for the teachers.

The contestants answered questions from eloquent quiz master, Tony Karlton Twumasi who took them through four rounds of competition in English, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies.

Stating his rationale for organizing the competition, Mr Ansah, who is a former Director-General of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GHPA) and now Technical Advisor to the Ministry of Transport in his opening speech said the purpose of the competition was among others to improve on the standards of education in the Asuogyaman district.

The parliamentary candidate who chaired the event, also charged the Asuogyaman education directorate to ensure adequate supervision of education in the district and encouraged teachers to equally discharge their roles responsibly.

The former Director-General of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority said he's been supporting education in diverse ways since 1994 and promised to keep the competition going in the future.

He urged families to ensure that they produce two tertiary students and graduates in their homes.

“It is my aim to ensure that every household in the Asuogyaman District could in the next ten years boast of a tertiary student and you must equally strive to produce graduates in your homes,” he challenged parents and families.

The NPP parliamentary candidate has over the years organized competitive programmes for schools in the Asuogyaman district to boost their confidence, and also equip them for external competitions such as the Basic Education Certificate Exams (BECE) and the West Africa Secondary School Certificate Exams (WASSCE).

Aside from this, he has also sponsored the mock exams for BECE candidates, organised vacation classes for all the candidates as well as the provision of examination materials including mathematical set, pens and rulers for candidates and the provision of transport allowance for pupils who needed to commute to the exams centres.

The ‘Paul Ansah Prospectus Awards Scheme’ also supports pupils who obtained aggregate 6 to 10 in the BECE with Ghc 2000 to buy all items on their SHS prospectus.

He then called on other well-meaning citizens of Asuogyaman to come together to raise the image of Asuogyaman District to boost the education and other socio-economic developments in the District.

Senior High School Coordinator for the Asuogyaman, Madam Elizabeth Dugbartey in celebrating Mr Ansah for his acts of philanthropy noted that he was living his dream to raise the standard of education in the Asuogyaman district.

This, she noted, he is doing by supporting various educational activities and extended the appreciation of the entire education directorate to the NPP parliamentary candidate for his gesture.

Boso Senior High Technical School (BSTS) emerged champions of the first edition of the competition held in 2017 at the Apegusu Senior High School with Akosombo International Senior High School (AIS) winning the second edition of the Competition in 2018 and held at the Akwamuman Senior High School.

Various officials from the Asuogyaman District Education Directorate witnessed the competition.
