The Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, and two others, on September 24, 2025, filed a suit at the Supreme Court to challenge the exclusive status of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA).

In the suit, which named the Attorney General and the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) as the first and second respondents, respectively, the plaintiffs have asked the apex court to grant them seven reliefs, including a declaration that the references to the “Ghana Bar Association” in sections of the 1992 Constitution, as well as, the Legal Profession Act, 1960 (Act 32), do not pertain to the current Ghana Bar Association, a private association, but to the umbrella association of lawyers in Ghana.

According to the plaintiffs, the exclusive recognition of the Ghana Bar Association for constitutional powers, rights, roles, and privileges denies rival associations of lawyers the same rights, which they deem inconsistent with Articles 17 and 21(1)(e) of the 1992 Constitution.

Represented by Dr Jennifred Maurice Adjei of Obour Minta and Co, the other plaintiffs are Israel Tetteh and the Ghana Law Society, as the first and third plaintiffs, respectively.
