Ghana was hit with one of its deadliest disasters in 2015, after torrential rains on the evening of June 3, 2015, led to massive flooding at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra.

The flood, which had engulfed buildings, vehicles and key installments in the area, was compounded by a sudden explosion at the Goil filing station opposite the Vienna City.

The explosion, which was later reported to have resulted from leaking fuel from the Goil filing station, spread wildly on the flood waters, setting ablaze victims who were being washed away by violent rushing waters.

The twin disaster, according to multiple media reports, led to the deaths of hundreds of victims who were unfortunately caught between the horrible events of wild fires and neck-high flood waters.

Despite heart wrenching reports of scores of victims scarred from burns from the terrible disaster, a few recounted how they miraculously escaped the disaster that claimed hundreds of lives in the business district of the Greater Accra Region.

President John Dramani Mahama, who was the president at the time of the event, together with other government officials, visited the site to ascertain the situation and assure of actions to prevent a recurrence of the horrid event.

June 3 Disaster: This loss is catastrophic, unprecedented – Mahama

President Mahama, who visited the areas in the early morning of Thursday, June 4, 2015, was appalled by the situation and blamed human activity as a contributory factor to the flooding from the heavy downpour of Wednesday.

He said government officials were working throughout the night to offer support to victims and they will take measures to make sure it never happens again.

“Often when these measures are drastic, you have a lot of sympathy and pressure not to take those measures but I think that the time has come for us to remove houses out of water ways and the public should understand that it is necessary to save everybody else,” he said.

President Mahama also described the heavy loss of lives on Wednesday as “catastrophic and unprecedented.”
