FDB impounds unwholesome cooking oil

The Food and Drugs Board (FDB) on Monday said it has seized 20 tonnes of contaminated and unwholesome cooking oil with the brand name: Chaya Yellow Pure Vegetable Oil" that has come from Cote d'lvoire.

A statement signed in Accra by Dr Stephen K. Opuni, Chief Executive of FDB said, information reaching the Board indicated that laboratory tests on the oil revealed that it was extracted from pork fat.

It said consumption of large quantity of animal fat, including oil from pork fat could cause severe coronary heart diseases and kidney complications.

The statement said: "Even though the cooking oil has not been found on the Ghanaian market, the general public is hereby entreated to remain vigilant and report the sighting of the oil anywhere in Ghana to the FDB."

It asked the public to contact the following numbers; 0244- 337243; 0244-337235; 0244-337247 in the event of sighting the oil anywhere in the country.
