Eyewitnesses recount tragic fire that claimed two lives in Sunyani

Two individuals have tragically lost their lives in a fire outbreak at a carpentry shop in Penkwasi, a community in Sunyani, in the East Municipality of the Bono Region.

The deceased, identified as Reagan Kofi Atuahene and Alhassan Sherif Majeed, were trapped inside the burning structure and were unable to escape as the flames engulfed the shop.

Eyewitnesses, including workers and a family member of the shop owner, indicated that the fire began around midnight on August 19, 2025, according to a report by citinewsroom.com.

One of the workers, Zakari Abdul Mali, narrating how the incident happened, said that he woke up to find the entire shop engulfed in smoke.

Shaken by the incident, three of them managed to force the door open and escape, but unfortunately, the two victims supposedly got trapped inside and were unable to escape.

“When we woke up, the entire place was filled with smoke. We managed to force the door open. Three of us managed to escape, but two others were trapped inside as the structure burst into flames,” he stated.

Rachel Duku, sister of the shop owner, who also witnessed the incident, shared her account.

She stated that she lives on the opposite side of the same shop which caught fire, but despite the fact that the door to her side was locked, she managed to escape.

Unfortunately, her brother’s section was already engulfed in flames by the time she escaped the inferno.

Out of the five workers who had been sleeping in the shop, three managed to escape, while the remaining two tragically lost their lives.

According to citinewsroom.com, the Ghana National Fire Service has launched an investigation into the incident, while the remains of the victims have been deposited at the Sunyani Teaching Hospital morgue.

Also, the Bono Regional Commander, ACFO II Cecil Risch Addo, confirmed that efforts are underway to determine the exact cause of the fire.

He also disclosed that the Bono Region has recorded 158 fire outbreaks since the beginning of the year, raising serious concerns about safety in the area.
