Expired malaria test kits on the market – FDA warns

Chief Executive Officer for Food and Drugs Authority, Delese Mimi Darko Chief Executive Officer for Food and Drugs Authority, Delese Mimi Darko

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), has alerted the “general public of an expired malaria Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT) kit being offered for sale on the Ghanaian market”.

According to the FDA, the SD Bio Line Malaria Test kit has been registered by the FDA but investigation has revealed that the product has been re-labeled and being sold on the market after expiration.

The re-labeled product has the information:

Lot No.05CD017A Mfg. Date : 2018-03-09 Exp. Date : 2020-03-08 Code : B303D

“It is therefore a dangerous situation to have a test for malaria using RDT kit, which would certainly produce a false result and may lead to inaccurate diagnosis,” a press statement issued by CEO of FDA, Delese A. Darko, on Friday 13 July 2018, said.

FDA has subsequently entreated all health professionals in possession of such kits to desist from using them and hand over to the FDA for safe disposal.

The FDA has also entreated the public to report to them if they see any of the said product at any market.
