The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have launched a comprehensive investigation into the recent Z-9 Air Force helicopter crash, with plans to involve both independent aviation experts and the aircraft’s manufacturer in analyzing the recovered black box.

Ashanti Regional Minister Dr Frank Amoakohene confirmed that the helicopter’s flight data and cockpit voice recorder, the essential “black box”, were successfully retrieved from the crash site with the help of local residents and military personnel.

President Mahama announced that a full and transparent inquiry, led by a formal Board of Inquiry, has commenced.

This independent investigative panel will spearhead efforts to determine the cause of the crash.

Aviation analyst Wing Commander (ret’d) Patrick Nelson Sogbodjor, speaking on TV3, highlighted the next crucial step: the black box must be opened and analyzed by either the manufacturer of the helicopter or their experts.

This process is essential for extracting and interpreting the flight data accurately and comprehensively.

Captain Michael Yao Foli, also an aviation expert, emphasised that Ghanaian protocols align with ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) standards, which typically mandate that crash probes be conducted by an independent accident investigation board, not merely a military-appointed panel for credibility and transparency.

By involving technical experts and the manufacturer in the investigation, Ghana is striving to ensure accuracy, impartiality, and transparency in understanding this tragic loss.
