Accra, Oct. 5, GNA- The week-long exhibition of the Voter's Register commenced in Accra, with voters showing apathy towards the exercise, whilst others express optimism that the event would gather steam as it moved into the week.
The seven-day event, which forms part of the Electoral Commission's (EC) efforts to wean the register of anomalies, takes place at all polling stations nationwide from 0700 to 1800. It would serve as an opportunity for voters to verify their names and other particulars on the register, as well as ask for corrections of wrong data.
Some constituency exhibition centres the GNA visited recorded low turn out of eligible voters to validate their official records. The constituencies included Ayawaso East, Ayawaso West and Ayawaso Central, Ledzokuku-Krowor, Odododiodio and Klottey Korley. Some exhibition officers and members of the public attributed the low turnout to the late start of the publicity campaign about the event by the EC.
"Some people do not even know that an event like these is even going.
"They pass by, see people checking their names in the register and then begin to ask what is going on," said Francis Amoah, an exhibition officer.
"Others who know about the exercise have decided not to check their status, because of the warning the EC gave that it would arrest illegible voters and those who have re-registered". Both the officials and the public were unanimous in calling on the EC to intensify education on the exercise. They however expressed optimism that the exercise would pick up in due course. Ms Dorcas Baidoo, Exhibition Officer, complained that there were mistakes in the spelling of names, and incorrect ages were recorded in the register for Jack and Jill International School A centre. A statement issued earlier by the EC warned all persons who had indulged in multiple registrations to assist the EC to remove their names from other polling station registers to avoid prosecution upon later detection. Minors and unqualified persons who voluntarily removed their names from the register would not be prosecuted.
