Examine alternatives for funding health insurance - GNAT

Kumasi, Aug 20, GNA- The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has asked the government to examine other alternatives to fund the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). This was contained in a statement signed by Mrs Irene Adanusa, General Secretary of GNAT on the scheme in Kumasi on Wednesday. The statement said GNAT is against any "incursions into the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) contributions since the about one million contributors to the fund cannot effectively fund the scheme". in a manner to yield maximum benefits.

"We appreciate government's efforts to ensure good health for Ghanaians as we have all been distressed by the operations of the "cash and carry" system. It called for re-examination of the proposed National Health Council and said the association was very apprehensive about how the scheme is being handled. The government, GNAT said should not sacrifice social and economic effectiveness for political favour.
