Ex-convict gets two years imprisonment for stealing

The Winneba Magistrate Court has convicted a 21- year old ex-convict to two years imprisonment in hard labour for stealing.

Isaac Afful, based in Agona Swedru pleaded guilty with explanation and the court presided over by Mr. Charles Owusu Nssah sentenced him to his own plea.

Narrating the fact of the case to the court, Prosecuting Police Detective Sergent Peter Agbelie told the court that the complainant of the case was one Madam Elizabeth Jackson, a trader who has two shops; one close to the other at the Winneba Main Lorry Station, while the accused also claimed to be a trader.

The Prosecution said, on 3rd November, 2014, the complainant left one of the shops to transfer some goods into the other shop. On her return, she met the accused person with a polythene bag coming from the shop she had left.

He said the complainant confronted the accused about his presence in the shop and the content in the polythene bag. He added that, when the accused person sensed danger, he dropped the polythene bag and took to his heels.

Detective Sgt. Agbelie further said that, the complainant then raised the alarm and the accused was apprehended by people around the area.

He said when the polythene bag the accused dropped was searched; they found a hand bag containing 400.00 Ghana Cedis as well as some hospital drugs belonging to the complainant. He was then arrested and handed over to the police.

According to the prosecution, when the accused was interrogated, he admitted the offence of stealing.

The Prosecution earlier told the court that, the accused (Afful) in 2012 was sentenced on a similar offence and he was convicted to six months imprisonment in hard labour.
