Every single Ghanaian must be trained in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) in order to deal with the rate at which people die as a result of heart attacks in Ghana, Dr Frank Serebour, Vice-President of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), has said.

According to him, per best practices, every Ghanaian must have basic knowledge on how to rescue people who suffer from heart attack before they are sent to the nearest hospital for treatment.

His comments follow the sudden death of former Vice-President Kwesi Amissah-Arthur who collapsed at the Airforce Gym during a morning workout session and was rushed to the 37 Military Hospital where he was pronounced dead on Friday, 29 June 2018.

Dr Serebuor, speaking on this development, told Chief Jerry Forson on Ghana Yensom on Accra100.5FM Tuesday, 3 July that: “The Vice-President collapsed in a gym, we are told, so, the question is: Have the gym instructors been trained in CPR, have we trained our drivers, mates on CPR? Have students, teachers, market women been trained in CPR?

“Elsewhere, especially in the advanced countries, every single person around is trained in CPR to enable them rescue people who suffer from heart attacks before doctors even come in.”

He added: “We have a long way to go and we must start doing this thing now,” he added.
