Encourage Ghanaians to study their civic rights

Techiman (B/A) March 24, GNA - Members of the Gender-Base Civic Club, under the auspices of National Commission for Civic Education(NCCE), have been charged to intensify their education in sensitizing Ghanaians about their civic rights and responsibility to ensure that proper democracy thrives.

Mr. Michael Amponsah, Brong-Ahafo Deputy Regional Director of NCCE, made the call at a day's orientation seminar for 70 gender base club members, made up of queen mothers, traders, assembly members and civil society groups in the Techiman Municipality. Under the theme, "Civic Education, Gender and Development," the seminar was organised by the Municipal Directorate of the NCCE, with support from the Techiman Municipal Assembly and was aimed at equipping the participants on gender, democracy, civic rights and responsibilities as well as development.

Mr. Amponsah noted that the adoption of democracy demanded a lot of knowledge, which every ordinary citizen had to acquire. This, he stated, would help citizens to participate much more meaningfully towards the democratic dispensation and urged all to carry out their civic responsibilities.

Mr. Amponsah asked the people to be conversant with the provisions of the 1992 constitution so they would be capable of educating others about their civic rights and responsibilities. Madam Victoria Adomako, Deputy Municipal Coordinating Director of Techiman Municipal Assembly, blamed serial callers on the FM radio stations for tarnishing the image of government officials instead of tackling issues that would enhance socio-economic development of the State. She urged members of the club to redirect the objectives of the club to sanitation by way of organising communal labour to address environmental pollution. Nana Boakye Ansah, Krontihene of Woaso, in the Techiman Municipality, who presided, said Techiman needed peace to develop and asked the leadership of the club to involve the youth in their educational programmes.
