Employment Minister to kick-start debate on salaries

Accra, Nov. 16, GNA - The Minister of Manpower Development and Employment, Mr Yaw Barimah, is to kick-start the national debate on salaries in the public sector at a workshop in Accra on November 19.

The workshop to come off at the Ereta Hotel would be held under the auspices of the Public Services Commission (PSC).

Issues raised in a presentation by Professor Bartholomew Armah, an economic analyst of the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) at a lecture in May would be addressed at the workshop.

A statement issued by the PSC said institutions invited to the workshop include the Office of the Chief of Staff, the Ministries of Finance and Economic Planning and Manpower Development and Employment.

Other bodies are the Office of the Senior Minister and the Economic Management Team, Head of the Civil Service, Controller and Accountant General's Department and National Development Planning Commission.

The statement said workers' organisations such as the Civil Servants Association, TUC, Ghana Registered Nurses Association, the Judicial Staff Association and Ghana National Association of Teachers would also participate in the workshop.

The rest are the Ghana Employers' Association and the Association Ghana Industries, Centre for Policy Analysis, Institute of Economic Affairs, Private Enterprises Foundation, Members of Parliament and a number of individuals.

The statement said the workshop, under the chairmanship of Professor Ernest Aryeetey, Director of the Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research ISSER), would review the presentation of Prof. Armah under four separate sub-headings.

Those to lead discussions on the sub-heading are Mr Felix Tamattey, Senior Manager, Public Sector Group, Priceweaterhousecoopers, Mr Isaac Yanney of the TUC, Mr Daniel Amamoo of the Ministry of Finance and Economic

Planning and Dr Anthony Tsekpo, Research fellow at ISSER.
