Electricity Tariffs Go UP Again

Electricity tariffs have been increased by six per cent for the various categories. This is contrary to claims by the tariff regulatory body, the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) that it has not approved any tariff increases. JOY FM has secured documents confirming that there has been an increase in tariffs, approved by the PURC.

The increase, which was approved last month, takes effect from 1st October. The document contradicts the Public Relations Manager of the PURC, Joseph Opare Djan’s claims that the Commission has not approved any increases.

The available documents confirmed a statement by the acting Director of Operations at the Electricity Company, Joe Coleman on JOY FM that there has been a tariff adjustment.

The approval was communicated to the utility companies on the 27th of last month. A memorandum from the Chairman of the PURC, Kwame Pianim to the managers of the utility companies noted that the new tariff represents the upper limit of rates chargeable. This is the second time this year that utility tariffs have been increased.
