Dear Member,
The general election to select the next Asantefuohene and Ohemaa was scheduled for Sunday December 12, 2010. It is unfortunate that it has taken a week to report back to the entire membership as well as the general public. The reason for the delay is due to the complexity of events that took place that day. In a nutshell; THERE WAS NO ELECTION AND AS A RESULT THERE IS NO RESULT FOR THE PEOPLE OF ASANTEMAN. Allow me to recount the events of the day as to the best of my knowledge:
On the morning of December 12, 2010 the electoral board was ready and set for the election, Preparation and set-up was completed about 12:30pm. At about 1:00pm, Mr. Tieku Acheampong a candidate for Asantefuohene arrived at the pooling station with Grace Genfi, a candidate for Asatefuohemaa and their supporters. Among the supporters were: Margaret Nyarkoh (aka: Mama Nyarko), Mr. Daniel Adjei (aka, Kuwait), Rebecca Opoku (aka, Akua Adu) and Prince Osei Bonsu who introduced himself as journalist and a campaign manager for Mr. Tieku Acheampong and Grace Genfi (a non-member of the organization), Opanin Yaw Sarfoh and Nana Gyamfi a father in-law of Mr. Tieku Aheampong; just to mention a few demanded the list of eligible voters.
It is a normal practice to provide a list of the eligible voters to all eligible candidates upon request. When I complied Mr. Tieku Acheampong snatched the list and retorted that the list was a fake one. Mr. Tieku Acheampong did not stop there but continued to disrupt the electoral process in a fury by taken the ballot sheets, a letter from the Asanteman council of elders which detailed advice to the electoral board and why there should be an election.
Nana Amakye who is a member of the electoral board arrive and joined Mr. Tieku Acheampong and his supporters to continue the disruption by causing curse and insults upon me. The situation became very tense to a degree that my personal security became a concern since I was outnumbered. At this particular time it became sensible for me to call off the election on the account of Asanteman Constitution article VIII, subtitle “ELECTIONS: set (d)’ – “All elections shall be conducted under the supervision of the Electoral Board and any agents that the Board may so empower”.
The Asanteman Council of Elders has been verbally and officially notified. I am waiting for their response and directions. As of today, I am reporting to the people of Asanteman that:
1. THERE WAS NO ELECTION
2. ELECTION BALLOTS WERE TAKEN AWAY FROM ME BY MR. TIEKU ACHEAMPONG AND HIS SUPPORTERS
3. WE DO NOT HAVE A NEW ASANTEFUOHENE AND ASANTEFUOHEMAA.
4. THE ELECTION IS SUSPENDED AND MAY BE CANCELLED TILL FURTHER NOTICE.
5. THE ASANTEMAN COUNCIL OF ELDERS WILL STEER THE AFFAIRS OF THE ORGANIZATION FROM JANUARY 1, 2011.
6. NANA ANANE AMPONSAH WILL HAND OVER POWER TO THE ASANTEMAN COUNCIL OF ELDERS AT THE END YEAR 2010
Allow me to take this moment to thank all of you for allowing me to serve you for the purpose of Asanteman Association of USA, Inc. I wish all of you a very merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
Sincerely yours,
Nana Adjei Boateng
