Ekumfi Fruits and Juices Ltd, a leading producer of premium Made-in-Ghana fruit juices, has secured a significant export contract that will require the company to operate 24 hours a day.
This milestone is expected to create over 12,000 jobs in Ekumfi, one of Ghana’s most deprived districts, boosting employment and economic growth in the Central Region.
As part of its expansion, Ekumfi Fruits and Juices has partnered with Central Citrus Ltd, the largest citrus processing factory in West Africa. Built with local material support from Dzata Cement, Central Citrus Ltd will also transition to 24-hour production, creating an additional 15,000 jobs in the AAK district.
The factory will process 15 tons of oranges per hour and introduce a new, high-yielding citrus variety known as Pixie.
This initiative will provide farmers with better-quality crops, ensuring a sustainable livelihood for the youth while promoting import substitution and enhancing Ghana’s agricultural exports.
The combined efforts of Ekumfi Fruits and Juices, Central Citrus Ltd, and other upcoming ventures, including the Komenda Sugar Factory, have the potential to revolutionize Ghana’s natural food and beverage industry; an industry valued at over $550 billion globally.
Currently, Ghana imports fruit juices and related products worth $250 million annually, a figure that could be drastically reduced with increased local production.
Experts estimate that Ghana’s fruit and exotic value chain has the potential to generate over $5 billion annually from just 800,000 hectares equivalent to one-third of the country’s total cocoa farmland.
This expansion could also create over 900,000 direct jobs, positioning Ghana as a key player in the global agro-processing sector.
