Eight women win seats in Wassa West District election

Tarkwa (W/R) Oct. 11, GNA - Only Eight women, out of 26 who contested this year's District Assembly Elections, won seats for various electoral areas in the Wassa West district, the Electoral Officer told the Ghana News Agency at Tarkwa on Monday.

A total of 54 seats were contested for.

Mr Yaw Opoku, the Wassa West District Electoral Officer, said the low number of successful women candidates was an indication that much needed to be done to include them in decision-making at various levels in the country.

The voter population in the district was put at 138,465 while the cumulative votes cast in the District Assembly and Unit Committee Elections were 60,172 of which 59,230 ballots, representing 43.5 percent was considered valid.

Some 947 ballots, representing 1.57 percent, were rejected, Mr Opoku said, adding that this shows that voters were now aware of voting procedures.
